Running, Jumping, Standing Still is an album by blues artists Spider John Koerner and Willie Murphy, released in 1969. Koerner and Murphy performed folk and blues as a duo for five years. Although offered the opportunity by Elektra to record a second album, Koerner declined in order to pursue a film career. Murphy declined an offer to become a producer for Elektra. In a 2010 interview, Murphy recalled, After we made the record, we had to. Running, Jumping, Standing Still. Koerner, Ray & Glover's Spider John Koerner provides the playful, what-me-worry, Piedmont-by-way-of-Minnesota blues, and Willie Murphy adds inspired, loose-keyed, ragtime piano. At times, songs like Red Palace and Sometimes I Can't Help Myself sound like the perfect backdrop for Lilly Langtree in a Dodge City saloon circa 1883. Album 1969 11 Songs. He romps a little harder than usual on Running, Jumping, Standing Still, obviously grooving on the extra energy of pianist Willie Murphy. Koerner's folk roots get liberally sprinkled with ragtime, rock & roll, and barrelhouse boogie-woogie courtesy of Murphy's magic fingers. Murphy also sings lead on two tracks, including the long, jazzy piano workout Old Brown Dog. Koerner and his booming guitar shine on the strutting R. At the age of 15, he was one of the youngest to ever get a student glider pilot license. He enrolled in 1956 at the University of Minnesota as an engineering student, but in early 1958, he became a student of the burgeoning folk scene. With a borrowed guitar and a Burl Ives song book, he began a journey which helped shape the course of American country blues and folk music. Koerner formerly of Koerner, Ray and Glover and Minneapolis bluesman Murphy decided to get together in Northern California and record a fun album. Despite major promotion from Elektra Records the album bombed. Though they only performed together for a few years, their 1969 breakout album Running, Jumping, Standing Still has a lasting cult following. There's no other record really that sounds like it, before or after, said M. Old Brown Dog. Willie Murphy & Spider John Koerner. Magazine Lady. Sometimes I Can't Help Myself. Good Night.
