Music from The Penguin Cafe was the first album by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It was recorded between 1974 and 1976, and released in 1976. The line-up for tracks 1, 9, 10 and 11 consisted of the original Penguin Café Quartet as they are referred to in the liner notes: Simon Jeffes. The Penguin Café Orchestra attracted considerable critical attention with their 1976 debut album Music from the Penguin Café for the eccentric manner in which leader Simon Jeffes used unusual instruments to create a world music-influenced sound that has been described as instrumental folk or neo-classical. The latter label is quite accurate in what Jeffes really tries to achieve on Music from the Penguin Café: classical music with modern instruments. From the start, however, the music on Music from the Penguin Café really drifts witho. The Penguin Cafe Orchestra PCO was an avant-pop band led by English guitarist Simon Jeffes. Co-founded with cellist Helen Liebmann, it toured extensively during the 1980s and 1990s. The band's sound is not easily categorized, having elements of exuberant folk music and a minimalist aesthetic occasionally reminiscent of composers such as Philip Glass.
