Morningrise is the second studio album by Swedish progressive metal band Opeth. It was released on June 24, 1996, in Europe by Candlelight Records and on June 24, 1997, in the United States by Century Black. The recording sessions took place at Unisound studio, in Örebro, during March and April 1996, and once more the band used producer Dan Swanö. Morningrise was the last Opeth album produced by Swanö. It was also the last Opeth release with drummer Anders Nordin and bassist Johan De Farfalla. Opeth is easily the greatest of all of these borderline spiritual artists. Their earliest works, most notably Orchid and Morningrise, are albums that provide an emotional escape from the world that surrounds us. This escape is offered through different means. At times, it comes in the form of beautiful acoustic work with stunning sung vocal harmonies. Other times it comes from the tortured screams and harsh riffs with layered lead guitars that create a somber atmosphere. The riffs here on Morningrise are some of the most distressing yet most captivating in metal. Type: Full-length. Morningrise is, as far as the metal scale goes, possibly their least heavy album it also contains their longest songs - just five of them, ranging in length from ten to 20 minutes. The tracks all take their time developing, shifting back and forth from full-on metal sections marked by distorted dual guitar riffs and growling vocals to calm, acoustic guitar-based passages with more softly sung vocals.
