Since about 1980, pianist John Tilbury has been a member of what is arguably the finest improvising ensemble in the history of free music, AMM. One of the clearest elements he brings to AMM's music is a consistent reference in his playing to the work of Morton Feldman. Unbeknownst in all likelihood to many fans of that ensemble, Tilbury had been cultivating a reputation as the premier interpreter of Feldman's music and the results are magnificently borne out in this four-CD set. Part of that New York group of artists in the 1950s that included John Cage and Jackson Pollock, he invented his own intuitive, subtle mode of composition, as close as music gets to abstract expressionism. For technical reasons, because of the 90-minute duration of each piece too long for a CD, this live recording from the 2006 Huddersfield Festival. John Tilbury born 1 February 1936 is a British pianist. He is considered one of the foremost interpreters of Morton Feldman's music, and since 1980 has been a member of the free improvisation group AMM. Tilbury studied piano at the Royal College of Music with Arthur Alexander and James Gibb and also with Zbigniew Drzewiecki in Warsaw. 1968 he was the winner of the Gaudeamus competition in the Netherlands. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. This four disc set is a brilliant overview of Morton Feldman's piano works from the 1950s to the 1980s. The first has shorter works from 1950-64, the second 'Piano 77' and 'Palais de Mari', the third 'Triadic Memories' and the fourth 'For Bunita Marcus'. As Feldman's importance has come to be recognized over time there have been more recordings made of these works but Tilbury worked with Feldman and has an unerring sense of exactly how to do justice to his intentions without taking liberties

Nice 4 CD set but has since been surpassed by this more comprehensive 5 CD set below
