Martha Raye With Dave Rose And His Orchestra - Stairway To The Stars, Melancholy Mood Shellac, 10. Martha Raye possesses a sweet yet strong and swinging voice, and she handles ballads beautifully. I enjoy Martha Raye because in Anita O'Day's autobiography she lists Raye as her biggest influenceaside from the obvious Billie HolidaY. Martha Raye is a jazz influenced singer with lo's of pep on the uptempo numbers. She has a way of phrasing which leads me to believe she is a jazz influenced pop singer. This cd is recommended to jazz collectors as well as nostalgia buffs. The mood is right there in the lyrics: Im in the mood for dancing, romancing, Im giving it all tonight. Its a happy song, about hoping to meet Mr or Miss Right at a club. We recorded the backing vocals first, then added things as we went along, like a jigsaw. I ended up writing a track for Billy Oceans debut album in 1976. But I carried on cleaning windows. Id be out there every morning, in the dark, in the winter. I only stopped after Ben Findon offered me a contract to write songs. I started strumming my guitar and Im in the Mood For Dancing came through as if it already existed. Guys are taking a chance all the time, aren't they But for girls, it's a big thing. Id never even seen the girls. Titled First Rose of Spring, the record features two new songs written by Nelson with producer Buddy Cannon, and Nelsons interpretations of tracks penned by Toby Keith, Chris Stapleton, and his longtime friend and contemporary Billy Joe Shaver. The country legend, whose last album was Ride Me Back Home, tackles Keiths Dont Let the Old Man In, Stapletons Our Song, and Shavers We Are the Cowboys. Nelson, who weathered the death of his longtime drummer and best friend Paul English last week, will play with Stapleton on his All-American Road Show on March 14th in Arlington, Texas, and on April 25th at A Concert for Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Born in London, Rose and his family moved to the United States when he was four years old. As a teenager, he studied at the Chicago College of Music after he graduated at the age of 16, he joined a dance band led by Ted Fio Rito. That same year, he met and married Martha Raye, whom he accompanied on her hit single Melancholy Mood. However, their union lasted less than a year and he soon began a relationship with Judy Garland which led to marriage in 1941 the couple divorced in 1945. In 1941, MGM Studios hired Rose as a musical director. For Me and My Gal feat. David Rose and His Orchestra. Judy Garland & Gene Kelly. Holiday for Strings
