Mary Violet Leontyne Price born February 10, 1927 is an American soprano. Born and raised in Laurel, Mississippi, she rose to international acclaim in the 1950s and 1960s, and was the first African American to become a leading performer at the Metropolitan Opera, and one of the most popular American classical singers of her generation. Reviewing her televised farewell opera performance at the Met in 1985, as Aida, one critic described Price's voice as vibrant, soaring and a Price beyond pearls. Selections from different operas by Richard Strauss, as sung by Leontyne Price for her RCA recital discs. Sieh, Amme, sieh Empress's awakening scene. Leontyne Price Sings Strauss Arias. Leontyne Price - Richard Strauss, 1965. Boston Symphony Orchestra. Salome: Dance of the Seven Veils, 09:28. Leontyne Price was the first artist to record the Guntram aria. The quasi-Wagnerian music, complete with heavy orchestration, poses no apparent terror for her, as she sings it with remarkable abandon, plush, creamy tone in the middle yielding to a gleaming, ringing climax of laser-like high notes. The excitement is palpable throughout. Finally, we are treated to a Price specialty, Zweite Brautnacht, an aria that showcases the full arsenal of this magnificent voice. The exquisite vocalism throughout this entire collection. Album 1965 4 Songs. Leontyne Price - Richard Strauss Leontyne Price. Erich Leinsdorf, Leontyne Price & Boston Symphony Orchestra
