Clarinetist Johnny Dodds made a lot of fine records as leader, sideman, accompanist, and member of collectively organized units. His discography is filled with compilations spotlighting different portions of a wonderfully productive but all-too-brief career. Additionally, tracks 12-22 feature Dodds at the helm of his own Black Bottom Stompers. These fine early jazz recordings allow us to hear him at the height of his powers, working in collaboration with Louis and Lil Armstrong, Kid Ory, Earl Hines, Barney Bigard playing tenor sax, and Johnny's brother Warren Baby Dodds. The inclusion of four alternate takes allows for solo comparison. Lill's Hot Shots. Definitive Dodds 1926 - 1927: The Complete Sets. Drop That Sack. Drop That Sack 2. New Orleans Wanderers. Johnny Dodds was one of the most important New Orleans musicians to play in Chicago during the 1920's, the beginning of recorded jazz. He played clarinet with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Seven and Jelly Roll Morton's Trio. This disc includes the eight sides by the New Orleans Wanderers and New Orleans Bootblacks which featured, along with Dodds, George Mitchell on cornet and Kid Ory on trombone. Especially outstanding is Perdido Street Blues, which begins with an underlying riff and continues with haunting solos by Mitchell and especially Dodds. New Orleans Stomp. Love this track.
