In 1977, London tried to cash in on David Bowie's tremendous popularity with Starting Point, a ten-song LP looking back on his 1966-67 Deram output. The album had its critics, who argued that London was simply out to make a quick buck and could have cared less about the quality of the material it was reissuing. But truth be told, these are songs that should have been reissued. David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its style and content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that he was later known for, such as the folk rock influenced Space Oddity or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart. Space Oddity was the name used for releases of the album in 1984, 1990, and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues. The 2019. The whole Hunky Dory album reflected my newfound enthusiasm for this new continent that had been opened up to me, Bowie said in 1999. That was the first time a real outside situation affected me so 100 percent that it changed my way of writing and the way I look at things.
